Today brushless motor for transportation is used for more than just tricycles and cars.

Very amazingly Electric vehicles aren’t as new as you’d think. The first electric vehicle, a tricycle, was engineered in 1881 by French inventor Gustave Trouve. This was made possible by the creation of his electric motor, allowing Trouve to reduce the weight of motor components to obtain an impressive energy output.

Engineers  have spent years trying to improve electric vehicles. After all, they consume less fuel, resulting in lower greenhouse emissions and better gas mileage for drivers. Many of these attempts, especially those surrounding electric cars, focus extensively on trying to improve the batteries. But maybe it’s time to reflect on what made Trouve’s tricycle so revolutionary.

While better electric storage systems, batteries or fuel cells, should continue to be encompassed in an overall strategy for improving electric vehicles, there’s a big piece of the puzzle that’s only now coming into play: the motor.

 

WHY CHOOSE BRUSHLESS MOTOR FOR TRANSPORTATION?

Brushless motor is lightweight, efficient, and durable. They weigh less than AC induction motors, and they are more efficient and durable than brushed DC motors. Induction motors require AC power and have more wiring which causes the motor to weigh more. The brushed motors have brushes that grind against conduits for operation. Over time, these brushes wear down, spark, and create dust inside the motor that causes it to deteriorate and stop working.

The brushless motor uses less wiring and removes the brushes to get rid of the sparking, dust, and failure. These design strengths are why brushless motors are the go to motor in transportation needs. Wally Rippel, Tesla’s Principal Power Electronics Engineer, predicts that DC brushless motor will continue to dominate the hybrid and coming plug-in hybrid markets.Based off the advantages of the brushless motor, that’s a very strong prediction.

WHERE  BRUSHLESS  MOTOR IS USED IN TRANSPORTATION?

Some electric bicycles utilize brushless motor built directly into the wheel hub, with a stator fixed to the axle and magnets attached to and rotating with the wheel. The majority of electrically powered RC models use brushless motors as well thanks to their light weight.
